The Race That Is Set Before Us (Heb.12:1)

Updated: May 10, 2023

"...and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us" (Heb.12:1b).

'Race' could be defined as rapid or constant onward or constant movement . Anyone engaged in race needs full concentration so as to come out victorious. More often than not, there is a reward or commendation for the winners in such race, while losers have no reward.

In our text of today, the 'race', like any other race, is set before us. We did not set it. By implication, the 'One' who set the race dictates the terms and conditions for participants to be judged winners or losers. This is in line with the saying that "he that plays the piper dictates the tune".

In that case, for us to be counted winners, (we are no losers anyway) it is required of us to observe all the terms and conditions therein, to the letter. This is akin to a student who aspires to succeeding in an examination. He has to follow the details of the instructions as 'set forth' or 'spelt out' by the examiner.

In the meantime, the need for ENDURANCE to succeed in the race is of utmost importance. If Jesus Christ our model could 'endure' the cross because of the joy set before Him (Her.12:2), nothing short of that is expected of us. He endured a great deal: the scourging, beating, humiliation, and what have you.

What then is endurance? I put endurance as the TONIC OR IMPETUS needed to overcome all seemingly impossible situations in any circumstance. Endurance is the key and the driving force that will see you through the rough road to success.

Friends, let us remember that there is no crown without a cross. Nothing good comes cheap. That is why we need to brace up against all odds to be able to get to the finish line. Beloved, what goal are you aspiring to, aside from your christian faith, that requires endurance ? Starting a business, educational pursuit, looking for legitimate opportunities? Then, be ready to endure and you shall get there !

PRAYER: LORD, endow me with the grace to endure and overcome all hardships in my christian life and on my way to success. Amen!
